It can be annoying and even painful, but we’ll suffer through the misery for smooth silky legs or eyebrows that match. There are plenty of ways to get rid of unwanted fuzz, but finding the right hair removal technique can be tricky. Are you looking to save time or for something semi-permanent? Find the technique that’s perfect for you!
Hair Removers
1. Shaving
This is probably the fastest and most efficient way to get rid of unwanted hair. Shaving right in the shower might save you time that day, but you’ll only be slicing the hair off at the skin level. The downside of shaving is worrying about razor bumps, but thankfully some great creams will help you avoid them.
2. Depilatory Cream
A depilatory is a cream that weakens the hair so it can be easily scraped off. This fast and inexpensive way to remove hair is painless and can be done at home. Don’t scream for joy just yet. Depilatories can be messy and may cause skin irritation. Try testing the product on a bit of skin before applying it to your entire leg. New formulas are extra-gentle (but still effective) and can be used on the bikini and underarm areas.
3. Waxing
It can be a painful process, but waxing removes hair for a long period of time. Waxing pulls each hair out from the root, which means the hair will grow back slowly. In some cases it takes anywhere from two to eight weeks for hair to completely return. This method also allows you to remove large sections of hair (legs, anyone?) at one time. Though there are many at-home wax kits, going to a salon will ensure that the process is done properly.
4. Threading
Threading is very common in Indian and Arab cultures and consists of using a twisted cotton thread to pluck hair out from the follicle. Think tweezing, but on a much grander scale. Be warned: This method is extremely painful, but the hair will take longer to grow back. Threading requires a lot of practice, so it’s best to go to a salon for this treatment. If you’d rather stay home, try an epilator, a machine that grasps each hair and pulls it from the roots. It’s similar to threading, but best for legs and underarms.
