It’s the beginning of a new year, and you know what that means! Resolution city. If you’re like us, you’ve got “No, seriously, get to the gym more!” on the top of your list. The gym gives you mood-enhancing endorphins, body confidence, and can even keep your skin glowing—provided you follow the proper precautions. Sweat and bacteria can get trapped in clothing and clogged pores, so be sure your gym skin care regimen is as solid as your workout plan by following these three tips:
1. Put Down the Foundation
It’s tempting to look your best while you work out—who hasn’t had a gym crush? But stick to waterproof mascara and liner if you must—steer clear of anything on your face (this means even primer and tinted moisturizer, no cheating). If you’re coming straight from work, toss some makeup wipes in your gym bag and use them religiously before you step onto that cardio floor. Heat opens pores, which can lead to clogging as you sweat.
2. Keep Your Hair Up There
Be sure to put your hair up in a high ponytail or bun. If you can, steer clear of hair products before working out. If your hair’s already styled for work, slip on a terry cloth headband to absorb any leave-in moisturizer migration. After your workout, spray roots with a dry shampoo and blast your hair upside-down with a blow-dryer. Though it might sound a bit gross, the slight saltiness of your sweat will give your hair body and texture, and the dry shampoo will soak up excess oil and odor.
3. Blast That Bacteria
Arguably the most important step of all: after your workout, swipe your face, chest, and any other breakout-prone areas with handy cleansing pads to clean your skin and combat any bacteria. Go easy on the serious skin care, since your skin can be sensitive after a heavy workout. Use cool water to invigorate your complexion after a sweat session, and be sure to moisturize immediately after cleansing to keep your skin from drying out. Try a redness-reducing formula such as Clinique’s Daily Relief Cream.
